Come and Try: Canyoning Deconstructed!

Trip type:

It's a little known fact that Canberra does not have any canyons within city limits. But here we are in a brave new "post-truth" world; we will go canyoning regardless!

What is canyoning? Someone once described it to me as "the best bits of being lost in the bush, vertigo, hypothermia and drowning, mixed in with coiling and uncoiling a wet rope over-and-over". Brilliant!
(Actually there is a better definition here). So, with that definition in mind, here's what I propose to do:

  1. Meet at the BBQ sometime before 1.30pm.
  2. Collect ropes, gadgets, and unsuspecting participants from Fellows oval.
  3. Bush-bash by the least direct route from Fellows through Black mountain reserve to Black mountain peninsula (probably here)
  4. Commence unnecessary rope faff using the convenient trees on the peninsula (read: FLYING FOX- YES, THERE WILL PROBABLY BE A FLYING FOX)
  5. Then there will be a mandatory swim to the little island while wearing boots, harness, ropes and 20 carabiners.
(Note to the safety officer: no that will not actually happen, promise).

You're free to join either at the BBQ or to come find us on the peninsula. If you can't find us then give me a call, you'll find the contact details on the club page, under canyoning officer (technically, I'm an admiral).
We'll probably wrap up around 4pm.

What to bring: hat, sunscreen, swimmers (if desired), questions, and some means of entertaining yourself while people stand around debating whether a figure-eight beats a stein knot for setting a fixed line...
