If you have been camping before, but want to try out snow camping this trip is for you. A simple overnight snowshoe with plenty of time to enjoy the scenery (faff) and learn what’s required to camp in the snow.
Leaving from Dead Horse Gap, we will snowshoe ~1km up through the snowgum forest to the base of South Rams Head where we will set up camp. The next morning we will snowshoe up to the trig point atop South Rams Head, which will be a short but steep ascent, climbing ~200m over ~1km. After spending some time enjoying the view, we will head back to the car and back to Canberra.
Snowshoes are a fun and easy alternative for background country snow exploration, especially if you are looking for an entry point to other backcountry trips with the club this season. This tried and tested route is sheltered, short and varied, and therfore ideal for snowshoe/snow-camping beginners.
Participants with vehicles will be given priority on this trip.
**When signing up, please let me know what camping experience you have. Participants should be have outdoor experience in terms of knowing how to dress for being active in cold weather (waterproofing, layering (eg. no cotton), spare clothes) and what to pack for a cold overnight trip (food, water and so on).**
