Beyond Teddy's

Trip type:
Bushwalking
Difficulty:
Easy
Start date:
Tuesday, 9 January 2018 - 6:00am to Thursday, 11 January 2018 - 9:00pm

This relatively easy, but nonetheless mostly off-track, three-day bushwalk explores the alpine backcountry of Kosciuszko National Park south of Thredbo. Highlights will include grassy alpine valleys and meadows, snow gum woodlands, crystal-clear mountain streams, majestic peaks, awesome views and likely brumby sightings. You can also look forward to two nights camped on soft snow grass within the shelter of a magnificent stand of ancient snow gums beside a wonderfully restored small rustic mountain hut with well-ventilated timber walls, dirt floor and new fireplace. The first day involves a 12km walk up the open, grassy Thredbo Valley from near Dead Horse Gap (~1540m), through The Big Boggy, to our base camp near Teddys Hut (~1730m). Along the way we will detour to The Chimneys (1885m), a prominent crag on a ridge of the same name located about 5km south of Thredbo in Kosciuszkko National Park. The summit provides awesome panoramic views, including the Rams Heads and Mt Kosciuszko to the northwest, the whole of the Tin Mine area, including Cascade Range, to the southwest and the steep drop southwards down to the Jacobs River, leading to the Snowy River Valley in the distance. Time permitting we will also visit the summit of nearby Mt Terrible (1850m). On the second day, we will explore the surrounding area with light daypacks. Likely destinations are Drift Hill (1931m) with views both north-west towards the Main Range and south-east over the Mowamba River and Paddy Rushes Bogong (1900m) which towers 600m above Thredbo village and provides views across the valley to the ski slopes. On the third day, we will return to Dead Horse Gap along the shorter route through the open woodland of Brindle Bull Hill (1872m). This trip is suitable for beginners new to overnight bushwalking. This relatively easy, but nonetheless mostly off-track, three-day bushwalk explores the alpine backcountry of Kosciuszko National Park south of Thredbo.
