The Easter long weekend makes the 6 hour drive to the Warrumbungles worthwhile. Adventurous day-long trad routes on the ancient volcanic remnants await the intrepid climber. The guidebook produced by the Sydney Rock Climbing Club gives a good introduction.
The climbing is a little serious - routes are long, and loose rock is not uncommon. You need to be a competent trad climber in order to lead here.
The plan is to drive up and walk and in to a campsite near Balor Hut (about a 1.5 hour walk) on Wednesday or Thursday afternoon, then climb until we have to head home on Monday or Tuesday evening, returning to Canberra late at night. Because the routes are long, we'll split up and climb independently each day. Each party will be responsible for themselves, and should be prepared to get a little lost on the way to or from their climb.
You'll need to bring climbing gear (two ropes, helmets, and basic self-rescue kit are essential), and camping gear and food for 3-4 nights.
