Beautiful views, mountain ash woodland and snow covered sub alpine plains.
This rarely visited area and trackless ridge in the underrated northern end of Kosciuszko national park should not to be missed.
Who is the walk for?
This walk is suitable for fit Intermediate bushwalkers who are interested in learning the fundamentals of off track navigation and route finding. You must be able to handle uneven terrain, thick scrub and steep climbs. There will most likely be snow on the ground for the majority of the walk.
Distance – 20km per day
Off track – 75%
We will start the walk at the locked gates on Long Plain road and from there we will follow the road and join up with the Port Phillip fire trail. After two kilometers we will begin the off track section of the walk.
We will head south through rolling plains until we reach the start of the climb up Peak Back Ridge. The climb will be steep but hopefully open and free of rough scrub. We will follow the ridge all the way and hopefully get some nice views as we go. The ridge drops off steeply and we will end up right above the mighty Murrumbidgee. Once off the ridge we will begin looking for a place to camp for the night.
On Day 2, we will search out and follow Dairymans creek through steep country until we arrive at Dairymans Gap. Once at the gap it will be only a short while until we are retracing our steps back to the cars.
Cold… Windy… Snow…
The fine print:
When registering, please give me a brief outline of your overnight bushwalking experience. I will make a decision on who is most suitable for the trip and notify everybody of the outcome no later than a week prior to the trip commencing.
We will decide on arrival if snowshoes are necessary for the walk or not. It is difficult to judge the snow cover in this area. I am treating this walk as a snow trip and I will require that you bring the appropriate gear whether there is snow on the ground or not.
If the weather looks bad, I will cancel the trip or change it to a bushwalk somewhere else. The cancellation may happen as late as the morning of. Please keep this in mind when registering. Unfortunately, this is the nature of any trip to the high country.
Pre-trip and transport:
We will have a pre-trip meeting the Thursday before the walk so we can go over the plan and organise gear. I will send around a list of things to pack for the walk prior to the pre-trip. I will drive one car on the day and I will need someone else to drive another. Please let me know if you can drive when registering.
Please contact me if you have any questions.
