Mt Jagungal is the most northerly 2000m mountain in Australia. It stands alone and imposing, surrounded by large open plains and snowgum covered knolls. It will be the focal point of this 3 day and 2 night walk in Kosciuszko National Park.
We will begin our walk at Guthega power station and rock hop across the Munyang River, which is now sans bridge. We will climb Disappointment spur trail for roughly 4 kilometres before heading off track and scrub bashing our way to the top of Disappointment ridge. We will follow the ridge, passing Mt Gungarten and eventually joining the beautiful Kerries Ridge. We will follow Kerries Ridge down to Mawsons hut and find a campsite close by and next to Valentine Creek.
On Day 2 we will head for Mt Jagungal, crossing the undulating plains at its southerly base. We will climb the steep southeastern spur until reaching the summit. We will descend the mountain, joining up with the Grey Mare Firetrail and finishing the day at either Grey Mare hut or somewhere nearby.
Day 3 will be all on track. We will aim to be back at the car no later than 2pm and back in Canberra by 6pm.
This trip is suitable for intermediate and fit bushwalkers. The majority of the walk is off track and exposed. It will be steep and over rough terrain.
We will need to average around 25km a day.
