Nadgee Wilderness Walk

Trip type:
Bushwalking
Difficulty:
Medium
Start date:
Thursday, 26 September 2019 - 4:00pm to Sunday, 29 September 2019 - 9:00pm

Come and join me for a long weekend on the Nadgee Wilderness Walk, a 55 km remote coastal walk at the edge of NSW and Victoria.

That's the plan:

Day 1/2 Thursday/Friday

We will start 4pm on Thursday and drive out to the far south east of NSW (4-5 hours). At the Merrica river ranger station (the end point of our walk) we will set up camp for the night and early next morning we will get a lift to Mallacoota where we will take a boat to set over the inlet to the starting point of our walk. That afternoon, we will walk down to and along the beach over sand dunes to our first campsite at lake Wau Wauka. Be aware, we might have windy conditions during the walk and strong wind + sand can be a somewhat painful combination. In return, I expect the scenery to be truly beautiful! (roughly 20 km)

Day 3 Saturday

We will pass the border from Victoria to NSW. The scenery will change eventually from sand and dunes to heath and cliffs which we can get a good look at from the Osprey lookout. We will camp at Little Creek. (roughly 17 km)

Day 4 Sunday

If everything goes as planned we will reach Newtons Beach at relatively low tide just to have high fun exploring some of the caves there. Last action: heading back to the Merrica river ranger station where our cars await us. We will reach Canberra late, most likely not before 8 pm. (roughly 16 km)

Obstacles:

We will have an early start every day. If we can't keep up with the outlined, somewhat ambiguous, plan we have to spend an additional night in the peaceful vastness of this Australian wilderness.

This trip depends on somebody signing up who is willing to provide his/her car, because I myself don't have a car. Though, I am very willing to share the driving.

The car and boat transfer cost some money, so do the nights in the park. (325 AUD total for the transfer, 10 AUD per person and night). This sums up to roughly 75 AUD per person, if we are 7 all together. Plus cost for fuel.

What to bring:

-at least 3 liters of water (we should have a change to refill every day, but the water needs to be treated)

-water cleaning tablets

-equipment for camping at lower temperatures (we are not expecting anything below 0)

-rain jacket

-enough food to cover the whole period + one extra day

Please contact me if you have any questions.
