Dawn till Dusk in the Tidbinbillan Wilderness

Trip type:
Start date:
Saturday, 1 August 2020 - 6:30am

Rock scrambling, soaring views, scattered snow patches? If this sounds like something that would fire up the adventurous spirit in you, then join us for a challenging bushwalk in the Tidbinbillan Wilderness this weekend :D

We will be tackling a distance of roughly 19km in total, encompassing several steep ascents and descents. A lot of the day will be off track, or on very rough and badly defined tracks so please come prepared for a challenge.

We will meet in front of ANU Sport in the morning, and drive to Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve where we will leave one car at the Mountain Creek carpark. We will then do a car shuffle to the Fishing Gap carpark to begin the walk. From here, we will follow Fishing Gap Rd for about 2km, before turning NE up to Mt Domain to walk along the top of the Tidbinbilla range. We will follow the range for a few more km until we reach Snowy Corner, and then scramble up the rocks to see the amazing view from the top of Tidbinbilla Mountain (the highest point in the range! :D). We will continue from here towards Tidbinbilla and John's Peaks, with views out over the valleys on either side of the range. Depending on timing and the group's abilities, we will either continue to the Camel's Hump and follow the fire trail down to the Mountain Creek carpark, or simply follow the footpad down to the car from Tidbinbilla Peak.

This will be a long day of very tough walking. It is also likely that we will encounter snow which can be very slippery, so please only sign up if you are confident in your abilities and fitness levels!

Please make sure to bring:

  • water ~2L
  • lunch & snacks
  • raincoat
  • warm layers
  • decent shoes for hiking (hiking boots with ankle support please! No runners)
