Nungar traverse

Trip type:
Bushwalking
Difficulty:
Medium
Start date:
Saturday, 23 May 2015 - 7:00am to Sunday, 24 May 2015 - 5:00pm

This overnight weekend walk explores some of the hills, plains and huts of northern Kosciuszko National Park in the vicinity of Tantangara. Starting at Kellys Plain Creek on Tantangara Rd (~1300m) we’ll climb 410m over 1.8km through (hopefully) relatively open bush to the summit to Mt Nungar (1710m). This will be the hardest part of the trip. We’ll then descend 340m over 3.1km down the other side to Scofields Hut (~1370m) on the northern edge of Nungar Plain. From Scofields will head 6.5km south across the plain, a favourite haunt of brumbies, passed Crows Hut ruins to Gavels Hut (~1370m) for the night. This makes for a total of 11.4km (+540m vertical) for the first day. After a relaxing night at Gavels (which is reputed to have a good stone fireplace) we’ll walked 5.3km down a fire trail to the end of the walk on the Snowy Mountains Highway (~1170m). We’ll probably be back in Adaminaby for lunch, and back in Canberra before dark.
* This trip is now full. Registrations however remain open for the waitlist as experience shows that somebody is likely to withdraw before the trip.*
