Archived trip from old website run by Richard Salmons
This is a three-day snow adventure over the September long weekend. A social mix of ANUMC snow enthusiasts will head to the Main Range to camp for two nights, enjoying the excellent Spring snow (remembering that the Main Range has great snow in late September, even when the ski resorts are finishing up for the season). The big attraction of the three-day trip is that we can access the most scenic, spectacular parts of the Main Range. You may not believe these jagged mountain peaks and frozen lakes are in Australia!
This trip is for beginner skiers (there will be separate trips for intermediate/advanced skiers and snowshoers). The pace will be suitable for first-time snow campers, but be prepared to carry camping gear and food for two nights out, and you should also be prepared to carry your pack up to half a day each way (going at an easy beginners' pace). We use the Thredbo chairlift to gain our height, so the skiing with a pack is relatively flat (likewise you can go back down via chairlift if you're not a very confident skier).
In brief, we head to Thredbo, catch the chairlift, then ski to our campsite past Seaman's Hut*, ideally arriving at lunchtime. On the Sunday, we can ski the spectacular surrounding areas just carrying day packs, and on the Monday of the long weekend we pack up our campsite and ski back to Thredbo.
We also hope to have social events with other club members, such as a toboggan race. More details about this closer to the event!
*Known as the legendary 'Mic Cavazzini walking-frame memorial' camp site.
