* Priority for this trip is a follow-up for ski lesson participants, and leadership experience for up-and-coming trip leaders, so please sign up to express your interest, but final numbers and spots will be advised once enough people have registered.*
This is a chance to follow-up your ski lessons, consisting of Saturday evening night skiing at the Perisher ski resort, followed by a beginners' day trip in the lovely Guthega area.
Night skiing: this lets us practice the "downhill" part of cross-country skiing (using cross-country skis). It costs $30 for three hours on the Perisher front valley chairlift, thus we get plenty of skiing practice without having to climb back up the hill. It isn't a formal lesson, but we will offer plenty of tips and guidance to improve your skiing. That finishes at 9pm, and then we'll go and camp the night at Island Bend.
On Sunday morning, we'll go to the Guthega ski village and head out for a day in the surrounding snow. If the weather is good we might be able to head up the Guthega Creek to Mt Tate, a fine 2000 metre peak offering great views, followed by a fantastic ski all the way back to the village. If the visibility is poor, we can head to the Farm Creek area, which is quite sheltered and has great snow.
Departure from Canberra would be around 2pm on Saturday afternoon, letting us avoid the ski resort traffic. Thus the trip lets us do quite a lot of skiing, without soaking up an entire weekend. This trip is recommended for adding more skills if you have just done a ski lesson, and will greatly help your confidence in cross-country trips that involve skiing up and down hills (the downhill part often being more challenging for beginners).
