This is a three-day snow adventure over the September long weekend. A social mix of ANUMC snow enthusiasts will head to the Main Range to camp for two nights, enjoying the excellent Spring snow (remembering that the Main Range has great snow in late September, even when the ski resorts are finishing up for the season). The big attraction of the three-day trip is that we can access the most scenic, spectacular parts of the Main Range. You may not believe these jagged mountain peaks and frozen lakes are in Australia!
** This trip is for anybody who doesn't feel comfortable skiing with a pack on, or first time snow campers, we'll be travelling at a slow pace and avoiding most of the climbing by catching the chairlift **
This trip is for fully sick walkers with mad crazy walking skills... 'n stuff... yeah. We'll be catching the Kosciuszko Express chairlift up onto the range, carrying two days' gear and food and aiming for the same campsite as everyone else, but totally won't be falling over on the way and definitely won't be having any yard sales. But fortunately if anyone does happen to fall over spectacularly, we'll record it in full HD and also document the futile struggle to get back on your feet. Then later we'll set the video to yakety sax and play it for everybody at the AGM, to ensure your enduring notoriety.
Because it's actually really hard to fall using snowshoes, so don't be that guy.
We will try to find a totally flat way into camp, which will depend on erosion, plate tectonics and other geological processes (ie we take the Kosciusko tourist track past the fancy looking rocks by north rams head and through Rawsons pass). Once at the campsite, we'll have three days to eat, drink and be merry with occasional breaks to loosen the skier's bindings and laugh at the yard sales... I mean, to find some rad signposted paths and gnarly gradual inclines before cracking open the hip flasks and reflecting bitterly on poorly made life choices. On Monday, we'll pack up camp and walk our awesome way (so much better than the lame non-awesome way everyone else will take, trust me) back along Rams head range to dead horse gap for a garbage bag toboggan race through the trees into the creek which we follow back to the cars.
Distance: ~6km, Ascent: ~300m (but really gentle, don't worry you'll make it)
Catch Kosciusko express chair up
Follow tourist track to seamans hut
Monday follow tourist track to Etteridge gap then follow rams head range down to south rams head then dead horse gap
Follow walking track back to thredbo carpark.
Or for a later departure/shorter walk just follow tourist track to chairlifts.
