This strenuous day walk in Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve traverses most of the crest of Tidbinbilla Range, that magnificent line of mountains visible to the south west from the shores of Lake Burley Griffen. The views from the crest, both towards Canberra and in the opposite direction across the Cotter Valley to the Brindabella Range are truly impressive. The route for this walk is 13.6km, with about 900m of climbing and, depending on the group, will probably take about eight hours, including breaks. We’ll start in Tidbinbilla NR at the Mountain Creek carpark and set off along the Lyrebird Track before picking up a footpad that climbs a spur 700m over 1.4km to near Snowy Corner (1440m). From there we’ll walk along the crest of the Ridge, first 1km to Tidbinbilla Mountain (at 1615m the highest point on the range), then 2km to Tidbinbilla Peak (1561m) and descend 2.5km via Johns Peak (1440m) to the Camel Back Fire Trail and a 5.6km walk down the trail back to the cars. While a footpad exists up the spur to Snowy Corner and along the crest of the range it can be overgrown and not always easy to follow so some inadvertent scrub bashing may eventuate.
