ANUMC has agreed to subsidise part of the cost of an avalanche course to members. The course is to be done with Alpine Access, the total cost is $320, with 50% of that subsidised for students and 40% for non-students. This totals $160 for students and $192 for non-students. The course has a theory day followed by a practical day in the NSW backcountry, with the operation based in Jindabyne.
The course will run dependent on how many people show interest. The minimum number we will take is 6 people and the maximum 8. If more than 8 people sign up, people will be chosen according to how early they signed up, their experience and their previous contributions to the club.
Equipment needed for backcountry day:
Avalanche transceiver, Shovel, Probe (Alpine Access can assist with these)
Backpack
Water
Snacks & lunch
Sunglasses, sunhat, sunscreen
Beanie or helmet, gloves, goggles?
Warm layers (not cotton)
Waterproof outerwear
Skiers: Skis with touring bindings & skins, poles
Snowboarders: Snowboard & snowshoes OR splitboard setup, 3 piece poles
I imagine snowshoes would also be okay, but please keep in mind why you want to do this course (some skiers may need to use snowshoes if skis cannot be sourced for everyone, also dependent on the gear store opening before the course)
More details will be released if enough interest is shown.
