Weekly climbing
The use of the wall costs an additional $25 annually for club members. This helps us offset the large cost of running the wall (currently $1000 per month) in the face of rising hire costs.
Weekly climbing is conducted on the indoor climbing walls at ANU Sport in the Sport and Recreation Centre. Climbers must be ANUMC members and have a current belay pass to use the climbing wall. For new climbers, passes are provided after completing a belay course under supervision of a climbing wall officer. New club members with climbing experience also need to get a belay pass, and are encouraged to come along to belay courses where they can be checked off by a climbing wall officer, even if they don't need to be taught from scratch.
Belay courses are posted on the trip calendar or you can contact the climbing wall officers if there are none available.
The weekly climbing times for 2024 generally are:
Monday
- Old Wall 07:30 - 09:00
- Old Wall 16:00 - 18:00 and New Wall 16:00 - 20:00
Wednesday
- New Wall 07:30 - 09:00
- Old & New 16:00 - 19:00
Friday
- Old & New 16:00 - 20:00
Supervised climbing generally on Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings during the semester.
Note: ANU Sport sometimes doesn't give us the times we wanted! A Calendar link will be coming soon that has all the times will be available
Whenever using the climbing wall, climbers must display their belay passes on their harness.
- Supervised. Supervised social indoor climbing is available during club climbing times. Harnesses and shoes are also available free of charge for members. Due to the loss of locking carabiners in recent months, members relying on club gear are advised to bring one or two climbing-rated locking carabiners with them, as it is unlikely that sufficient carabiners will be available. Solo climbers can generally find a belay partner during club climbing times.
- Unsupervised. Climbers who have their own equipment and a belay pass, can climb during "off-peak" times. This is before 2 pm every day, as per ANU Sport's off-peak times. There are no wall officers during off-peak times, so climbers are expected to organise their own belay partner, behave responsibly and leave the wall in a tidy state. When climbing at off-peak times climbers must still sign in at the SRA front desk and show their belay pass.
- Private Bookings. Club members with belay passes can also book the climbing wall for private use. To book, two club members with belay passes must visit the ANU Sport front desk. No supervision is provided for private bookings, and club gear will generally not be available. Members who book the wall are responsible for sweeping chalk off the floor at the end of their booking.
Weekly kayaking
Regular social paddles depart from the ANU boatshed on Sullivan’s Creek. These sessions are ideal for developing skills and confidence before participating in weekend trips further afield. Beginner paddlers will be supervised and must be able to swim in order to participate.
Paddlers must bring clothes and shoes that can get wet. Additionally, sun protection and a warm top are also recommended.
Paddling Times
Weekly paddling is advertised each week on the ANUMC calendar. You must register to attend these events. Beginner sessions are open to all, and generally held once a week during semester.
