All welcome - everything about skiing with ANUMC in 2024.
Time: 6pm for 6.30pm start, Tuesday 21 May.
Place: Kambri, Marie Reay Teaching Centre Level 6 "Superfloor". (Building near Badger pub.)
Winter is coming! At ANU we are fortunate to be close to the high country, which uniquely in Australia is transformed in winter by deep blankets of snow. At ANUMC we are all about exploring the land in this fascinating season:
- It's a chance to enter this environment, regard the beauty of the landscape in its snowy cloak, and see the country close-up. Camping in the snow lets us see the colours of sunset across the snow, and the sunrise across the mountains.
- We travel safely through this challenging terrain, as we do in bushwalking, canyoning, mountaineering and most other club activities -- learning to use skis is one of our skills, alongside navigation, planning, first aid, understanding weather and many more.
- It's a social activity - we spend time together, experiencing such challenges as navigating through a snowy forest or crossing a mountain stream - and around camp we reflect on this and make good friends.
If you enjoy bushwalking, canyoning, climbing, kayaking or the like in summer, please come along and hear about how you can explore the outdoors in winter too:
- The snow season in Australia - we hope to start in late June, but did you know we often ski in November?
- How to get involved - if you are active in the outdoors, we have trips where you can bring your outdoor experience to the snow.
- If you have never skied, we have all the information you need about organising cross-country ski lessons, and we want to offer you a chance to add this activity to your outdoor adventures.
- If you have past outdoor experience - any activities with ANUMC or similar clubs, or school/club trips such as Duke of Ed or especially anything involving overnight bushwalking, and you can also ski blue runs at a ski resort, we have a good option called Alpine Touring. You don't need to learn a new skiing technique, but remember skiing is only part of it - you need good outdoor skills as well.
- We'll bring along types of ski gear so you can see what it's all about!
All welcome - no need to be a club member for this info night (but you'll need to be a member to come on trips). Optionally, sign up to indicate your past outdoor activities or interests - not necessarily skiing - if you can ski that is also good but often it's not the most important thing!
