Square Rock is an outcrop of massive granite boulders perched high above Corin Dam Road in Namadgi National Park less than an hour’s drive from the ANU. The Square Rock Walk rewards visitors with the best of what Namadgi has to offer – forests of Snow Gum and Alpine Ash, magnificent granite boulders and spectacular wilderness views. The 8.5km (return) walk starts at Smokers Gap on Corin Dam Road and follows a well maintained walking track as it climbs steadily 270m uphill to arrive at Square Rock. There are some stone steps along the way and at Square Rock itself a short steel ladder and high cliffs. It’s the perfect place for a lunch. A second lookout with views down Orroral Valley is located nearby, just ten minutes down a sidetrack. Much of the walk is 1400m above sea level and in winter there is often snow on the ground in sheltered areas. After the walk we have the option of dropping into Corin Forest Mountain Resort for a coffee. We’ll also stop at Gibraltar Falls where, if the walk has been hot, we’ve got the additional option of cooling off in a spa size pool at the top of the 50m high falls. Maps: Corin Dam 1:25,000.
Usually an ANUMC trip leader will hold a pre-trip meeting prior to the trip to meet people and organise transport, gear and other logistics issues. On this occasion there is no pre-trip meeting as this is a relatively simply day walk within an hour of the ANU. Transport and logistics will be arranged by email prior to the trip.
This is a relaxed, easy day walk suitable for beginners and a good introduction to bushwalking with the ANUMC. Unless we decide to be more adventurous it is entirely on walking tracks.
For this trip you should bring a sun hat and a warm hat, a warm top (eg fleece or wool), a water proof coat, good walking shoes or boots, at least 2 litres of water, head torch, lunch, snacks.
