Archived trip from old website run by madnicko
If you're new to the club and have been perusing the trip calendar looking for excitement, you've probably noticed some interesting canyoning trips posted. From Devil's Pinch and Nightmare back on the Newnes Extravaganza, to Waterdragon and the inauspicously named Bowens Creek North Branch Lower, canyoners have been making their way up to the Blue Mountains to play on non-beginner trips. After a hiatus over Easter, we still have some season left, and it's time for a beginner workshop to give new (and old) members a chance to get into the sport.
This is the first hands-on session, based at the club climbing wall in the ANU Sports building. We will be starting with some of the basic rope skills required for any and every canyoning abseil, plus a few that you always need to have in reserve. Many of these will be familiar to climbers and others with a background in outdoor sports, but others may not. So attendance at the first session is compulsory to be able to attend the second, outdoor session.
Due to lack of common evening availability among the expressions of interest, I will be sending out some notes to read over before the wall session in place of a preliminary theoretical session. Please read these, as it will make life easier for you and your instructors on the evening.
Workshop fees include the hire of a canyoning harness and belay device for both sessions, and a helmet for the outdoors session. Participants will need their own set of three (one long and two short) prussik loops. If you do not already have these, sets are available from the gear store for $10. If you are unable to make it to the gearstore before the 22nd, I will be at the wall early to make sets for those who still need them. Let me know if you'll be getting them made on the night.
If you have your own harness and ATC (or equivalent) and do not want to hire club ones, please let me know as there are certain adjustments that would need to be made before use.
Signups are limited by the availability of experienced canyoners to supervise. The limit will be increased as supervisors confirm their availability.
We will be at the club climbing wall throughout the event. All abseiling will be supervised.
