Archived trip from old website run by madnicko
If you're new to the club and have been perusing the trip calendar looking for excitement, you've probably noticed some interesting canyoning trips posted. From Devil's Pinch and Nightmare back on the Newnes Extravaganza, to Waterdragon and the inauspicously named Bowens Creek North Branch Lower, canyoners have been making their way up to the Blue Mountains to play on non-beginner trips. After a hiatus over Easter, we still have some season left, and it's time for a beginner workshop to give new (and old) members a chance to get into the sport.
This is the second hands-on session, based at Gibraltar Falls in the Namadgi National Park, 40 minutes out of Canberra. We will be following on from the first session by looking at anchor building, putting the skills from the first session into practice and group mobility through canyons. Participants will split into small groups under the supervision of an experienced canyoner to set up, use and dismantle anchors efficiently.
All participants must bring:
- Volleys or other footwear suitable for use on wet rocks.
- Clothes that can get wet.
- A change of warm clothes.
- Set of three prussik loops. If you do not already have these, sets are available from the gear store for $10.
- Canyoning harness and belay device (either personal, or hired as part of the workshop).
- Canyoning/climbing helmet with whistle (either personal, or hired as part of the workshop).
- Lunch and water.
- Snacks.
Afterwards, we'll get some pizzas (provided) and beverages to wind down, and participants will have the chance to ask any final questions they may have.
Attendance at the first session is compulsory to be able to attend the outdoor session.
We will carpool from ANU Sport. Please list whether you will have a car available for use in the registration comments.
Signups are limited by the availability of experienced canyoners to supervise and cars. The limit will be increased as supervisors and drivers confirm their availability.
We will be based at the Gibraltar Falls tourist lookout. All participants will be under constant supervision during the trip.
