This trip will make the most of the June long weekend to head further afield into the Victorian Alps!
I may be biased (I am Victorian) but Mt Bogong is the most stunning of all Australia's Mountains. Mt Bogong is Victoria's highest peak at 1,986 meters. Mount Bogong is a popular backcountry skiing mountain through winter and, according to Wikipedia only has snow for the mid winter-spring months. Hopefully we will defy Wikipedia and be camping in the snow!
The plan: Snow shoe to Mt Bogong
Saturday: A leisurely start - meeting at the ANU SRA at 12pm and drive the base of Mt Bogong (approximately 5 hrs drive) via the Hume High way. Camping at Mountain Creek picnic area.
Sunday: Walk up the staircase Spur track, rest and snack at Bivouac Hut halfway and then onto the summit ridgeline (very exposed) and walk to our campsite at Cleve Cole. Afternoon spent exploring/ building a snow cave.
Monday: Return the same way we came and drive back to Canberra.
Gear & Food: Further details will be provided closer to the time. Snow camping tents and pegs will be required as will snow shoes. These items are available from the gear store.
Fitness levels: This is not a beginner trip. The stair case spur track is steep, with approximately 4-5 hrs of up hill walking. A good level of fitness is required as is previous overnight walking experience. Snow camping requries extra gear hence packs willl be heavier than normal. The section before the summit is exposed and ropes may be required.
Please note that I will hold a pre-trip.
