Archived trip from old website run by Toby
We will be spending two nights down on the snowy river camping at the pinch river camp site. We will be running shuttles up the old Barry way paddling Jacobs River to Victorian Border. Note that you need to be competent in kayaking grade 3 rapids and will be able to roll. You will need to organize your own gear tent, sleeping bags (must be warm 3 season at least) Warm clothing including thermals, as nights will be very cold, dry top or wet suit for paddling as the water will be cold, dry bags. If you have any questions about what to bring please give be a ring and il will help you out.
Class: III
Season: The Snowy requires a great deal of rain to run, the best season is from April through till December.
Time: The entire trip is 21 km long, it is either a long day or a very delightful 2 day paddle.
Shuttle: 21 km (easy dirt roads)
Character: Short rapids and long pools through granite fields and gorges
The river itself is set in a wide and deep valley, with steep sided hills on either side of the river. The rapids tend to be short and interspersed with long and still pools. Two exceptions to this are the rapid immediately after the confluence of the Jacobs River and a gorge after the Pinch River. The gorge in particular deserves respect, it has surprised more than a few paddlers and at high levels becomes a very demanding section.
We will be paddling the 21km section between no name campsite and pinch river campsite on the snowy river. We hope to do this section once on the Monday and twice on the Tuesday. We will be leaving early morning Wednesday to return to Canberra. We will be camping at Pinch river campsite on the Old Barry Way.
