NSW Orienteering is running (possibly) this year's only ski orienteering event in the southern hemisphere on Sunday the 2nd of August at the Perisher cross country trails. Anyone that skis or orienteers is bound to have fun. We will leave Canberra on Saturday morning spend some time practising on the Perisher trails on Saturday. Then, we will orienteer on Sunday morning, and leave on Sunday afternoon or evening, depending on our enthusiasm to keep skiing.
For more information on the event see: http://act.orienteering.asn.au/events/?EventID=3321.
Costs: entry fee ($25 includes SI stick hire), car costs (share of petrol, park-entry, chain hire, $30 - assuming 4 people per car - up to $50 depending on people per car and car types), and hire of a full set of ski gear from the club ($15). Note that the $15 fee also covers any camping gear (tent, sleeping bag etc) that you may need to hire as well. You will also need to budget for food. Since there is another ANUMC ski trip running on this weekend, participants may not be able to hire skis from the club, so you should budget accordingly. We will arrange commercial ski hire in this case. More information on this to come soon.
You can sign up to the orienteering online at http://eventor.orienteering.asn.au/Events/Show/2862. This is recommended to ensure you get a map.
You will need all the gear required for cross country skiing and for overnight camping (a full list of necessary gear will be emailed to participants closer to the event). You will also need a compass. Let me know if you don't have one and I should be able to find one for you. You will need some way of carrying the map since your hands will have poles in them. I'm thinking of using a map case with a strap that will go around my neck. Other suggestions are welcome! 2WD cars will need snow chains - we can hire these on the way up. 4WD may also need them, depending on the forecast.
Signing up doesn't guarantee that you will be on the trip. The trip is dependent on weather - depending on the forecast, we may change our plans. You must have orienteered before. You must have been cross country skiing at least twice before. (You've got a couple weeks to practise both these things before the event!) When signing up, please detail your skiing experience and mention who you have skied with before. Also please make sure the vehicle rego section is filled out.
Leave Saturday morning from Canberra (SRA carpark) at 5:30am. Practise skiing on the Perisher trails on Saturday and probably have lunch at the nordic shelter. Return to the cars and drive to Island Bend. Camp there overnight. Drive back to Perisher, arriving between 9 or 10am. Compete in the event. Lunch at the nordic shelter, and then continue skiing or drive back to Canberra, depending on our level of enthusiasm.
