The title says it all.
We'll leave Canberra early (an alpine start!) on Saturday to get going from Guthega near sunrise. We'll head over the Illawong bridge and past/over Twynam to set up a campsite on top of the Main Range within striking distance of the Sentinel. We may have a chance to attempt to ski out to the trig on Saturday afternoon, but also have a back up window on Sunday morning if the weather or conditions are better. Depending on the speed/strength of the group and the conditions, we may try skiing the Sentinel itself or do some laps on other slopes along the way. Return to Guthega before sunset on Sunday by retracing steps. Pub dinner in Cooma if people are interested.
This has the potential to become a very hard trip, especially if we encounter a lot of ice, so all participants need to be very confident skiers and be prepared to handle ice and generally cruddy snow. Snow camping experience is essential because we may not have time to spend hours setting up camp if we want to have the best chance of getting to the trig.
The following gear will be required: skiing gear, snow camping gear, group emergency gear (be prepared to carry some group gear: e.g. bothy bag, first aid kit, epirb). I plan to attempt this on cross country gear (metal edges and fish scales with kickers), but AT gear with full skins would also be appropriate.
Participants contemplating this trip should be comfortable compiling their own detailed gear list but please get in touch if you have questions.
If you're interested in the trip, please sign up early so we can arrange tent/food/car groups by email.
Please let me know your experience when signing up if I haven't skied or camped with you. All sign ups are expressions of interest only and the final group will be determined by car availability and getting an appropriate mix of skills and experience.
As in the trip description above.
