This four day autumnal walk in the northern Jagungal Wilderness Area of Kosciuszko National Park explores some of the less visited areas between Round Mountain and Mt Jagungal, as well including the summit of both peaks. Magnificent Mt Jagungal (2062m) is popular amongst bushwalkers, many to whom consider it be the most outstanding peak in the whole park. The view from the top is one of the best. Over Easter you can therefore expect to see several groups on the summit, many having started from near Round Mountain. While we too will set forth from the same trailhead, the aim is to avoid the crowds by taking a more creative route, and finding more secluded campsites, away from the well-trodden Farm Ridge and Round Mountain fire trail circuit. Along with alpine meadows, snow gum forests, mountain views and many small waterfalls and cascades a highlight of the trip will be following the Tumut River from near the summit of Mt Jagungal back towards Round Mountain. Depending on the availability of transport, there'll be about 8-10 people on this walk selected no later than 18 March from the registration list on the basis of current membership, contribution and overall group experience. If you've not walked with me before I'll ask about your outdoor experience (eg have you done an overnight walk before?) and seek assurances of your capacity to safely complete and enjoy this great trip.
The overall route will be flexible, generally above 1500m in elevation, and with plenty of opportunity for navigation practice. Most of the walk will be along grassy sub-alpine valleys with some fire trails. An exception will be an optional descent of Hell Hole Creek where it plunges off an alpine plain towards the Tooma River. This section, where the creek drops about 180m in 3.5km, includes an unusual set of cascades.
