This ANZAC long weekend come exploring the northern Budawangs on a walk from the Endrick River entrance around Quiltys Mountain and across the tops of Mt Sturgiss and Mt Elliott. Day one is a 17km walk, mostly along old fire trails and foot tracks, to Flat Top Mountain then Sallee Creek and finally to our campsite at Styles Creek below the southern point of Quiltys Mountain. On day two we'll ditch the heavy packs and travelling light go exploring the nearby summits of Mt Elliott and Mt Sturgiss, two shear-sided plateaus perched on northern edge of Hollands Gorge. This will be a hard day walk. We'll only cover about 8km on this day, but it’s mostly rough off track going which requires a good head for heights as we'll be scrambling along ledges and spectacular cliff lines with uninterrupted drops beneath. The rewards will include stunning views across the deep chasm of Hollands Gorge, a look down onto Pagoda Rocks and a visit to Dark Brothers Cave and Hidden Valley. On the third day we'll once again shoulder big packs for the 19km walk out via The Vines back to the Endrick entrance. This is all on track, some of it through dense remnant rainforest, and may include a side trip to the aboriginal stone arrangements (bora grounds) on Quiltys Mountain. For an experienced bushwalker this walk, which has a huge variety of walking conditions, is probably of medium difficulty. It is suitable for fit beginners comfortable with rock scrambling. Distance: 44km / + 900m up. Map: Endrick 1:25,000.
Depending on the availability of transport, there'll be about 8 people on this walk selected from the registration list on the basis of current membership, contribution and overall group experience. If you've not walked with me before I'll ask about your outdoor experience (eg have you done an overnight walk before?) and seek assurances of your capacity to safely complete and enjoy this great trip.
