Archived trip from old website run by Terry Murphy
Without significant rainfall in the Canberra region, our recent opportunities to paddle the local rivers have been limited. However, the outdoor pool at The Queanbeyan Aquatic Centre is full - and warm - for now.
I will be conducting a series of practical kayak skills sessions during the next 6 weeks or so. These sessions will be for people who possess a wide range of skills. If you are a beginner, these sessions are for you. If you have more advanced skills, you will be coopted into sharing your skills with others. This is a chance for all to get into your favourite kayak and improve your skills before you head out on your next whitewater adventure. This is not a formal course and there is no certification.
We will practice basic paddling skills. You will improve your command of your paddle and your kayak. In so doing, you will become more confident and capable on moving water and be able to better effect self and assisted rescues. When you are ready, you may even conquer the holy grail of kayaking - the kayak roll.
More advanced paddlers with a 'bomb proof roll' should take this opportunity to practice other kayak rolling techniques. When pinned against a wall on the river, an 'offside roll' is worth having in your kit.
Bring the following if you can: Wetsuit or thermals, diving mask or swim goggles and nose clamp, swimmers, towel, wind protection such as a cag or other close fitting light weight spray jacket, warm clothes, shower soap etc, head lamp, cash (there is a canteen for the hungry or thirsty).
I plan to run these sessions on Mondays and Wednesdays or Thursdays each week for the next 6 weeks, depending on the level of interest of paddlers.
Meet at the shed before 1715 so we can load kayaks and depart for our road trip to Qbn Pool. We want to arrive by 1745 and be on the water by 1800.
