Mountaineers,
Winter is fast approaching and I am calling for applications to be apart of an alpine training activity in Kosciusko National Park (KNP) from 11 - 15 July. We're seeking six participants and two assisting instructors.
This is a great activity to develop your alpine skills on the the icy slopes surrounding Blue Lake, where you will learn everything from ice climbing, white-out navigation, snow travel, glacier travel, crevasse rescue, snow caving, river crossing techniques, and avalanche safety. As well as these technical skills, we will work to develop your soft-skills for expeditions - communication, teamwork and leadership strategies, risk management, emergency prevention and good decision making. The trip will culminate with a summit attempt of Australia's third tallest mountain - Mt Twynam.
We will have a pre-trip meeting at the ANU climbing wall from 6:30 pm on Tue 05 Jul. We will use it as an opportunity to hire the equipment; including boots, crampons, ice axes, snow protection, ropes, tents, sleeping bags, sleeping pads, and any other snow gear inside the shed. Visit the link below for a gear guide produced by a big NZ guiding company. It explains what each piece of equipment is and what options are available. It will help give you a better idea about what is needed, or at least help you 'talk gear'! http://www.alpineguides.co.nz/faq-gear-guide.
The trip is open to all members, but it will be a physically and mentally challenging activity that will take you out of your comfort zone in extreme weather.
More information will be posted in the coming few days as the planning goes ahead. Get around it. It promises to be a memorable experience.
Kind regards,
William Skea
TBD - The plan would be to undertake this as a 5-day expedition of Mount Twynam from Guthega Pondage, climbing at Blue Lake along the way.
