Avoid the ski resort crowds and explore the tranquillity of the alpine backcountry on snowshoes this weekend on this easy snowshoe walk to the eastern end of Rams Head Range in Kosciuszko National Park. Before the madness of Perisher, we’ll park the cars at Dainers Gap (1640m) on the Kosciuszko Rd and walk in a southerly direction past frozen Rainbow Lake to Pretty Point (aka Hunters View). This seldom-visited low knoll of about 1800m on the edge of the Rams Head Range has good views of the Thredbo Valley, some 800m below. This snowshoe walk is suitable for beginners and will be a great chance to spend a day exploring the beautiful Australian alpine environment without much effort. The route will cover no more than 6km through a mix of open country and snow gum woodland and involves no long arduous mountain climbs.
