Apparently Watsons Crags almost looks like real mountains. Let's take advantage of the long weekend to check them out!
We'll drive down to Guthega on Friday night and snowshoe in as far as we please. We'll have to cover about 9 km with a fair bit of ascent to reach the crags. Saturday, Sunday and Monday will be spent checking out the crags, climbing, and walking back to the car. We'll probably be back late on Monday night. I've never been there before, but it seems like there's many lines to climb, ranging from easy snow gullies to long rock buttresses. To get an idea of the terrain, here are photos of the South and North faces.
You'll need to bring whatever climbing gear you feel is appropriate, skis or snowshoes, and snow camping gear. It will get quite cold overnight - as low as -5. If you don't know what you need, have a chat with me and come to the pretrip.
Drive in to Guthega on Friday and start the walk in. Walk in via the spur North of Twynam Creek, traverse North of Twynam, and descend the West spur of Twynam. Camp at the saddle between Twynam and Pt 2136 on Saturday, Sunday, and possibly Friday night. Saturday, Sunday, and possibly Monday climb at Watsons crags, most likely on the South faces. Walk back to the car via the same route on Monday afternoon and return to Canberra.
