Archived trip from old website run by jvennik
**Due to the change in the forecasted weather for Sunday, we've decided to modify the trip to just spend 2x day trips into the back-country, as the visibility around Rams Heads can become particularly poor in bad weather.**
The plan is to spend the weekend back-country skiing with day trips out to Leather Barrel creek (just West of Rams Heads) on Saturday, and a yet-to-be-determined location on Sunday (possibly out from Guthega or to The Paralyser).
A description of the ski areas around South Rams Heads can be found here: http://www.ozbc.net/nsw_leatherrams.htm
A description of The Paralyser can be found here: http://www.ozbc.net/nsw_paraper.htm
This trip requires participants to have an intermediate skiing ability and be reasonably fit, as we might be covering up to 20km distance and 800m vertical distance each day with day packs. Participants should also be experienced in back-country winter conditions, i.e. know how to dress accordingly and know what gear to bring. You can ski on whatever kind of ski equipment you'd like, however, if you intend on using the club's AT ski gear, you must have previously attended one of the 'Setting up AT skis and ski information sessions' that Sebastian has run.
We will most likely camp at the Ngarigo campsite on Saturday night. If the weather forecast for Saturday evening looks miserable, we might head into Jindabyne for dinner. Otherwise, if the weather forecast looks good and you feel that you're missing out on the delicious food and beverages at the Mid-Winter Feast, let me know and I can pack multiple stoves, pots and pans, etc. in my car so we can cook up something even more gorge-worthy.
If I haven't skied with you in the back-country before, could you please provide a brief description on your experience in the 'additional information' box.
I'll initially limit the group size to 6 people (we'll need an extra car from Canberra), however, this may be expanded if more experienced back-country skiers join and are willing to help guide. (We can spit into smaller skiing groups.)
Leave Canberra at approx. 5-6am on Saturday, drive down to Jindabyne and meet Mark. Then drive to the snow, ski for the day (return to the car at around 4pm), then either head to Jindabyne for dinner or head straight to the campsite. Get up Sunday morning, pack up camp, meet Mark again, go skiing (return to the car at around 4pm), then drive back to Canberra to be home about 8:30pm.
