This year, the ACT has a new holiday! And what better way to celebrate than traditional Canberra style -- by leaving Canberra for the long weekend.
Over the Reconciliation Day long weekend we will undertake a 3-day hike in Kanangra-Boyd National Park: a wilderness area that is surprisingly only 100km as the crow flies from the center of Sydney, but it's quite possible we won't see anyone else for the entire weekend. Friday evening we drive up from Canberra and car camp. Saturday we descend Gingra Ridge, Sunday we ascend to a cave on the Ti Walla Plateau and then Monday back to the cars via Mt Cloudmaker. Expect classic Blue Mountains scenery: spectacular views over plateaus and cliffs, deep river valleys, and a mix of track and off-track walking with a little scrambling for good measure.
It's possible to do this hike in a frantic two days. We will take a leisurely three. Having said that, I will be recommending lightweight hiking (tarps, volleys, campfire cooking) -- as is the custom for this region. A light load will be particularly helpful on Day 2, where we ascend almost 800 vertical metres in under 3 km along a faint track with some scrambling.
Previous overnight bushwalking experience is recommended. If you haven't hiked with me before, please indicate your previous overnight bushwalking experience when you sign up.
Registering for a trip is a commitment to attend the trip! If you're not yet sure whether you can come, please don't sign up.
