This is a trip for all you people who have been climbing in the gym for a while, or have gone outdoors but only done top-rope or minimal lead and want to learn how to lead outdoors. You must have a current ANUMC belay pass. This trip is not for beginner climbers - it is for people who have been climbing for a while in the gym and want to learn how to lead, or know how to lead but want to become self sufficient. We will go through lead belaying, safety while leading (back clipping, leg positioning, etc), building top-rope anchors, cleaning routes, useful knots, and techniques for leading. We will also practice taking lead falls (as both the leader and the belayer).
You will need to bring:
• Climbing shoes
• Harness
• Helmet
• Belay device
• Sling (or other form of safety)
All of these can be hired from the gear store on Tuesday night or Thursday night from 6pm - 6:30pm.
We will meet outside the ANU gym early in the morning (7:30am), sort out cars, head to the crag at Tianjara Falls, climb for the day, and head back when it gets dark.
If you know how to lead and just want to come for a day of climbing that is fine. Numbers will depend on how many experienced people i can convince to come and how many cars we have available. Please put your experience climbing in additional information if i haven't climbed with you before, and if you are able to drive and have a car available. IF YOU DON'T DO THIS I WILL CANCEL YOUR REGISTRATION AUTOMATICALLY.
