Mt Jagungal, the Australian mainland's northernmost 2000m peak, stands alone from the Main Range in the middle of Northern Kosciuszko National Park. Reaching its summit involves a long and remote ski through beautiful wilderness.
We use the itinerary popularised in the club by Ray Vran and Nic Bendeli. As early as possible Friday evening we drive up to the Munyang power station. We leave the cars and start climbing up the 4WD track to Schlink Pass; depending on snow conditions we'll probably have to walk the first km or so. After 3-4 hours (11km), just over the pass, we reach Schlink Hut. This is the steepest uphill of the trip done! On Saturday we leave the trail and continue on to Mawson's Hut (about 2 hours, 6 km). There we dump packs and continue to Jagungal (around 5 hours return, 20 km). On Sunday morning there's another chance for Jagungal before we return to the cars. Total distance is about 55km.
I recommend lightweight touring (NNN-BC) skis; telemark or AT equipment is just too heavy. If you can't find a suitable set at the gear store, I recommend we hire skis from Wilderness Sports in Jindabyne on the way through.
If I haven't skied with you before it would be great to know your previous cross-country experience.
