This is a day cross-country skiing trip on high but relatively easy terrain including Rams Head peak and the highest mountain in Australia, Mt Kosciuszko. The plan is to take the Kosciuszko Express chairlift ($39 for a single ticket) from Thredbo village, which puts us only 300m below the summit, do the skiing thing, then return down easy Thredbo resort trails. (If $39 is too expensive for people, we could start from Dead Horse Gap but then we have a rather more substantial 650m to climb.) A loop via Rams Head peak and Kosi comes to about 15km, but if people are willing and the conditions are good I'd be keen to go a little further e.g. Wilkonsons Creek or over towards Mt Stilwell.
With the exception of the final downhill on Thredbo resort, we will stick strictly to the gentler slopes of Kosi and the area around the head of the Snowy River. This is not the trip for you if you want to do lots of downhill runs. AT equipment is not necessary; the club's cross country or telemark equipment will do fine. (NB you don't need to know how to telemark to use the telemark gear! Just use them like heavy cross-country skis.)
Let's have a brief check-in while hiring from the gear store on Thursday. If you don't need to come to the gear store (i.e. you already have skis) then just let me know beforehand.
When you sign up, please indicate your previous skiing experience so I have a rough idea of who's coming. REGISTRATIONS WITHOUT THIS INFORMATION WILL BE DELETED. Also please indicate if you have a car and whether you have a parks pass.
