This four-day autumnal walk will explore the northern Jagungal wilderness of Kosciuszko National Park, approaching from the west from the direction of the Dargals Range and exiting to the north at Round Mountain. Compared to the other ANUMC Easter walk to Jagungal (led by Stef and approaching from Guthega Power Station in the south), it will be a more leisurely pace, covering perhaps half the distance in the same number of days (ie about 12-20km per day), mostly along old fire trails or across grassy alpine valleys.
The route is likely to include ascents of, and awesome views from, Dargal Mountain (1726m) and/or Big Dargal Mountain (1714m) and magnificent Mt Jagungal (2062m). Many bushwalkers consider Mt Jagungal to be the outstanding peak in the region. It certainly has some of the best views. Over Easter you can expect to see several groups on the summit so, like Stef’s group, we will aim is to avoid the crowds by taking routes that are more creative and finding more secluded campsites. In doing so we will also likely visit various historic huts and huts sites, including picturesque Wheelers Hut near the old Toolong goldfields, as well as numerous mountain streams and waterfalls.
Depending on the level of interest and the availability of transport, participants will be in two groups, walking in opposite directions and meeting in the middle on the second night. An introverted old man with a camera and decades of experience in the mountains will lead one group, an extroverted woman with a passion for inclusion and lightweight long distance walking the other.
This trip is suitable for people with previous overnight bushwalking experience. Be prepared to answer a few questions intended to gauge your capacity to safely complete and enjoy this great trip.
