The Main Range Extravaganza (MRE) is the club's big annual snow trip. It is a relatively beginner friendly, social event where we celebrate Australia's winter wonderland - the Main Range, in Kosciusko National Park. We do various activities, including snow shoeing, skiing and ice climbing.
Main Range Extravengaza 2019: The Plan ---------------------------------------
On Saturday morning we're going to drive to Guthega and, in our respective 'activity groups', ski / snow shoe from Guthega to somewhere just north of Twynam Ck. This is a 5 km walk / ski, which will take longer than you think given you'll be carrying overnight camping equipment and traveling over snow. https://www.google.com/maps/dir/-36.3925804,148.3360558/overnight+parking,+Guthega+Rd,+Kosciuszko+National+Park+NSW+2642/@-36.3960349,148.3231812,14z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m9!4m8!1m0!1m5!1m1!1s0x6b3cccb155ac30cd:0xd739a22938e31376!2m2!1d148.377555!2d-36.3770678!3e2!5m1!1e4
We'll set up camp somewhere in the trees north of Twynam Ck, have lunch and then go skiing / snowshoeing / ice climing / chilling out at camp. We're going to bring the club's party tent so that we can hand out after dark and socialise.
On Sunday we'll go skiing and / or snowshoeing, before heading back to Guthega in the mid-afternoon.
In order to attend this year's MRE you will need to sign up to one of the various activities that are being run as part of the MRE. Look at the trip calendar for the activity that you are interested in and sign up to that activity. The acitivity trip's activity leader will be in touch to discuss details.
Activity / Activity Groups:
- MRE - Snow shoeing - trip leader: Yushu
- MRE - AT / Telemark skiing for pros - trip leader: James Bailie
- MRE - Easy Telemark / AT for people who don't ski too good: Melanie Stamell
- MRE - Cross Country Skiing
note - boot packing is an option for people who want to snowboard or if we run out of AT skis.
What do you need to attend?
Experience & fitness: Look to the individual MRE trip acitivities to see what experience you need for each of these. With regards to the camping component of this trip, you'll need prior experience camping (preferably not just car camping), be prepared to carry around 8 - 12 kg of weight (overnight gear) and be fit enough to drag this gear 5 km over snow. Send me an email if you are unsure about this.
Gear: You'll need warm clothes and warm sleeping gear. The gear store has a limited number of snow sleeping bags and mats, so if you want to hire those you will need to get in fast.

Leave Saturday morning and get to camp by lunch. Come back Sunday, late afternoon.
