Hi all,
Going to head out for a weekend of canyoning in the Wolgan Valley - Starlight Canyon on Saturday followed by a short dry exploration of the Timber Chute on Sunday (subject to the fires around Gospers Mountain not impacting this area). Starlight Canyon is a long day (approx 20km total distance with a steep climb in the morning) but has a spectacular tunnel section with lots of glowworms. Abseils a must, possible long swims (the tunnel is normally dry, but is known to fill up with water on occasion resulting in a long cold, dark swim). Not suitable for beginners - you need to be confident abseiling. Details of Starlight Canyon here: https://ozultimate.com/canyoning/track_notes/newnes.htm If time permits we will have a look up upside down canyon on the way past.
Sunday will be a shorter day to allow us to get back to Canberra (about 4 hrs drive) before dark avoiding extensive wildlife on the roads. I haven't been to the Timber Chute but it looks to be an interesting walk with section of dry canyon (no abseils) see details here https://sleepwhenwearedead.net/2017/09/03/the-timber-chute/
The plan will be to leave Canberra Friday afternoon - as early as possible as we can get away (ideally around 5pm, 6pm at latest). Depending on what time we get moving on Sunday we will likely be back around dinner time.
If you are interested in joining please email me with your canyoning/abseiling experience.
