An overnight on-track bushwalk with panaromic views of northern Kosciuszko National Park, open valleys, cool rock formations, old timber forests dappled with ferns.
This overnight bushwalk loops nearly 33km over two days. It starts from Wares Yard where there is a gentle climb into a saddle west and where we pick up a horse pad on to Alpine Creek Trail and head north very shortly until we pick up another foot pad taking us to the top of Tantangara Mountain. Tantantagara has excellent views of the Northern Kosciuszko NP, particularly taking in Mt Jagungal and maybe down to the Main Range. From there we rejoin the train to Alpine Creek Trail and head north-east to the Witzes Hut, taking in old wet schlorophyll forests with ferns and high gums and then open plains characteristic of the northern kosciuszko area. Expect to see quite a few brumbies in the afternoon. This forms a 17km day.
The second day we pack camp and head south on Wares Yard Horse Trail, climbing up a narrow but distinct trail to a ridge line seeing some cool rock formations, particularly from Blackfellows Peak across. This forms about 15.3km until we get back to our cars.
This trip is suitable for bushwalkers with self-sufficient overnight camping experience.
If you haven't bushwalked with me before, please outline your bushwalking experience, including whether you have carried an overnight pack, can set up a tent and be self-sufficient in cooking.
I use the method of grading this walk formed by Brindabella walking club, see: http://www.johnevans.id.au/wp/other-resources/grading-of-walks/.
