This four-day autumnal walk is centred on the southern Jagungal Wilderness north of the Snowy River, an area of Kosciuszko National Park untouched by this year’s devastating bushfires. Among the many delights of this area are the numerous open grassy valleys and ridges which make for great walking. Surprisingly, given it is blessed with excellent views and walking conditions, the area tends to have few visitors. The chances are that we'll have the mountains mostly to ourselves once we get beyond Schlink Pass and so long as we stay away from Mt Jagungal itself, which will attract swarms of bushwalkers like moths to a flame. The route will be generally above 1500m in elevation, flexible and mostly off-track with plenty of opportunity for navigation practice. It is likely to include peaking bagging in The Kerries (e.g. Mt Gungartan) and the Brassy Mountains (Big Brassy), together with visits to iconic mountain huts like Whites River, Tin, Mawsons and Kidmans. There’ll also be crystal clear mountain streams, cascades and falls, hidden alpine tarns, amazing granite boulders and magnificent stands of ancient snow gums. An added bonus will be hunting for alpine Easter eggs. This trip is suited to people with limited overnight bushwalking experience. Distance: 40-60km. Map: Jagungal & Geehi Dam 1:25,000.
**So you're interested but the trip appears full? Register anyway and get your name on the wait list. Circumstances frequently change such that some people who register early subsequently have to withdraw. You might also get on the trip because you are able to contribute something that is in short supply. That could, for example, be transport, local knowledge, a photogenic face or a positive attitude. Make a case for why you should get to go.**
The proposed route is Guthega Power Station to Schlink Pass along the western aqueduct trail then over Mt Gungartan to Tin Hut. From Tin Hut to Kidmans Hut along Dead Horse Creek. Then west towards Tarn Bluff. South from Mawsons Hut along The Kerries and Disappointment Ridge back to Munyang. The route is subject to change.
