This anchor building on-line session will be conducted over the COVID-19 period and has been approved by the Executive as a club activity.
Aim. The sessions aim to enable participants to build anchors using rope on natural surfaces for abseiling, top rope or canyoning under supervision.
Participants. Priority will be given to members who have shown a genuine interest in climbing, abseiling and/or canyoning. Although prior experience isn’t essential it is highly desireable. When signing up please advise of prior experience or any volunteer work you have done for the club.
Sessions. Members who sign up will be provided theory and practical instructions/worksheets to practice building anchors in benign environments such as within the home and backyard/park. Participants do not progress until they email through completed worksheets with pictures of their work. There will be 6 sessions/worksheets as follows:
- Knot tying (home)
- Basic anchor setup (home)
- Basic anchor setup (backyard or park)
- More complex anchors (backyard or park)
- Canyon anchor setup (home)
- Canyon anchor setup (backyard or park)
Although progress is at own pace, the expectation is that participants complete all 6 session within 4 weeks. On average, each session should take 2 hours to complete.
Gear. Each person will be provided:
- 1 x 6-10m static rope
- 1 x 5m static or dynamic rope
- 1 x 60cm or 120cm sling
- 1 x 3m tube tape
- 4 x lockable carabiners
There is only sufficient gear for four participants at a time. If you already have any of this gear please indicate this when you sign up as this may enable additional participants. Gear can be delivered to those who live in Canberra only. When finished gear will be recovered, washed and reissued to the next participant.
Cost. Participants will have to provide a $50 deposit to participate. Participants who lose any item will forfeit 50% of the deposit. Loss of two or more items will forfeit the entire deposit.
