Billy Billy Rocks is a cluster of massive granite boulders high above Tidbinbilla Valley. The walk to the rocks from Smokers Gap is a little less than 3km, but the absence of any tracks, steep terrain and pockets of dense scrub usually makes this a moderate to difficult day walk. Last summer’s Orroral Valley bushfire has cleared away some, perhaps most, of that scrub so until the regrowth takes hold the going should be easier. This Thursday there is an opportunity to explore the labyrinth of gaps, passageways and overhangs that can be found amongst the boulders, some of which are up to 20m high. From atop the rocks there are also good views into Tidbinbilla Valley and across to Tidbinbilla Range. If the weather is clear Canberra can also be seen. As this walk is close to Canberra we don’t need to depart until 8am and can expect to be back in Canberra by late afternoon, if not earlier. Distance: 6km. Maps: Corin Dam and Tidbinbilla 1:25,000. No pretrip. Details will be confirmed on email by Wednesday.
