If the forecast lives up to the hype we should have a lot more snow cover by this weekend. This trip will only go ahead if that pans out. I will confirm either way on Thursday or Friday - but we should have a good idea by Wednesday night in time for the pretrip.
THIS IS NOT A BEGINNER TRIP. BEGINNER TRIPS WILL HAPPEN SOON.
To join this trip, you must have touring experience, and you must bring gear that you are confident in using. This could be alpine touring skis, telemark skis or a splitboard, but if this is your first time using that gear then this is not the trip for you.
The plan is to head out from the top of the Kosciusko Chairlift at Thredbo ($50 for a backcountry day pass). We will then head
(a) West to South Ramshead, and then ski down to Leatherbarrel Creek (hardest option downhill-wise)
(b) Northeast to the Twin Valleys, attempting to find the terrain that we gave up on a couple of weeks ago due to insufficient snowpack (middle option downhill-wise)
(c) Northwest to find some skiable terrain between Ramshead and North Ramshead, or at Etheridge Ridge (easiest option downhill-wise)
It is possible that at this early stage of the season there will be hazards poking out of the snow, so we will need to keep an eye out.
If you sign up you are confirming that:
- You have been ski touring in the backcountry before
- You have used this kind of gear before, and you can ski down blue runs on that gear with some confidence
- You understand what you need to bring for a day of ski touring, including ski gear but also appropriate layers, food and water etc.
Gear-wise it looks like we have 4 useable sets of AT skis and 1 splitboard available for hire, plus our larger stash of telemark skis.
Telemark skis are also available, but please only opt for telemarks if you've used them before.
If you are keen to use our 1 splitboard (more to come!) please email me ahead of the pretrip to confirm.
In coming weeks we will have more sets of useable gear as gear store inventory gets added/repaired etc.
