The snowpack is likely to stick around later than usual, so let's make the most of spring skiing. Longer days mean we can finish later, and higher daytime temperatures will warm up otherwise icy patches and make for nicer skiing.
Exact plans for this weekend will depend on whether the road to Charlotte Pass is open, with the resorts having announced they will be closing the weekend prior.
If we assume the road is closed then we would ski from Guthega and camp on the lee side of Mt Twynam. If the road is open, we could make life easier by camping at Island Bend and doing two day trips from Charlotte Pass to Blue Lake.
To join this trip you’ll need to:
- Be an advanced downhill skier - ie ski black runs with confidence and get down pretty much any ungroomed terrain
- Have skied in the Australian backcountry a few times so you know what the conditions can be like and how to control your backcountry skis.
- Have snow camped before, or at least have extensive experience camping with a full pack.
- Ideally, know what it’s like to ski with a heavy pack.
The trip going ahead on this particular weekend will depend on the conditions and the weather forecast being favourable. If it’s not looking good I will look to reschedule and I’ll be in touch with the group to ascertain preferences.
It's TBC whether beacon and probe are required. If you have your own beacon and probe that would be a bonus.
If we haven't met please feel free to sign up but I'd really appreciate if you would email me with a few notes about your background and experience with backcountry skiing and general outdoorsiness.
