Archived trip from old website run by Terry Murphy
Before you head out after the next rains to explore our great rivers, learn to handle your kayak effectively. Join us on a road trip to Queanbeyan Aquatic Centre. Here you will learn basic kayaking skills in a warm, relaxing environment where you will build confidence in your ability to paddle a kayak safely on rivers, lakes the ocean and even in the surf. Some skills that you will learn include selecting and fitting your kayak and associated safety gear, techniques to keep you upright, effective paddle strokes and even techniques to get you back upright again - in other words, how to roll your kayak.
These lessons teach core skills that everyone should develop before paddling in the wild.
There is no pretrip for this activity. Just be at the shed soon after 5pm to select gear and to help load kayaks on the trailer/roof racks for our journey to Queanbeyan. We would like to start lessons at 6pm at the pool.
Things you should bring with you include: Thermal or wetsuit top, cag ie. a wind proof layer, diving mask (preferably) or nose clamp - (highly recommended), diving booties, a warm clothes change, towel (for a warm shower) a head lamp - it will be dark when we return the kayaks to the shed.
