** Update **
We have decided on Dusky track, arriving in Queenstown on the 20th of January, probably finishing around the 1st of Feb.
Currently we have four people confirmed and one maybe, with one spot free.

In Dante's inferno, the gluttonous and slothful were consigned to a rainy, muddy oblivion, where they would wallow in filth for eternity.
In NZ, Fiordland receives between 1200mm and 8000mm of rain per year, with 200 rainy days on average.
In the third circle of hell, the sinners were guarded by Cerberus; in NZ we have the mighty Kiwi!
But the unlucky adventurers who find themselves in Fiordland have yet another horror awaiting: the sandfly...

The Plan:
An epic 8-10 day tramp in the South Island of NZ: either the Dusky track or Stewart Island, depending on the choice of participants.
So far preference has been for the Dusky track. For more info see the original trip proposal here
Logistics:
We will base ourselves in Invercargill from where we can organise transportation to either trail head. Participants will need to arrange their own transport from Canberra to Invercargill.
We will aim to depart on the 20th of January (depending on weather and participant availability).
The ANUMC exec has generously made funding available for participants: $400 for students and $250 for non-students.
This will roughly cover the transportation to and from the track endings as well as hut fees in NZ. That leaves the cost of travel to Invercargill to be covered by participants.
Requirements:
It goes without saying that you will need to be fit to carry supplies for ten days over rugged terrain. You should also have experience in packing efficiently for long multi-day hikes.
Most importantly you should be the sort of person who can get into a pair of wet boots for the tenth day in a row, brush the cloud of sandflies away and walk out the door with a smile on your face.
The only tears on this walk will be tears of happiness after we tip the brown water from our boots for the last time at the ferry crossing...
Pre-trip:
Contact me via email, I'll be in Tasmania from the 17th of December until the beginning of the trip.
Begin walking 22/1 at Lake Hauroko end.
Follow schedule as in proposal (1 hut per night) weather permitting.
Detour to Supper cove.
Exit Lake Manapouri end 29/1 optimistically.

- The Dusky track (84 km) follows a deep valley linking two glacial lakes in Fiordland national park, hence it is only accessible by water or plane. It has a reputation as one of NZ's hardest hikes, there's mud, deep water, sandflies and 21 creek crossings.
This is all worth it when you cross Centre pass on the sixth day to be rewarded with epic views over the fiords and tarns. - Stewart Island is basically the Tasmania of NZ, except we did a better job of not killing the native fauna. It is the only place in NZ you can see Kiwi in the wild, not to mention many other rare bird species as well as colonies of seals and penguins.
The Northwest circuit track (125km) follows the rugged coast line visiting the huge dunes at Mason bay. Don't worry, there's mud too!
