Archived trip from old website run by Marco
Due to the Budawangs trip having to be called off this coming weekend I’ve decided to organise a last minute trip to Mt Bimberi and possibly Oldfields hut. At this stage the plan is:
Day 1: Leave Canberra around 7am. Follow the Australian Alps Walking Track from the old Orroral tracking station to Murrays Gap (approx. 22km). Camp at Murrays Gap, or if we decide, keep walking another 3.5km to Oldfields Hut – a beautiful hut on the other side of Murray’s Gap.
Day 2: Have a relaxed morning. Leave packs at Murrays Gap and walk to the top of Mt Bimberi and back. This night we could either camp again at Murrays Gap/ Oldfields Hut, or continue back towards the car and camp at Cotter Flats (7km from Murrays Gap).
Day 3: Walk out to the cars and return to Canberra.
Total distance if we camp at Murrays Gap: 48km
Total distance if we continue to Oldfields hut: 54km
I still have to work out a few details of the trip, but sign up if you are interested. There will be a pre-trip meeting on Thursday 6pm in the gear store to discuss the plan and organise tents/cars etc.
Although the track is steep in parts it should be a great weekend for a walk, and by spacing it over three days the pace should be fairly relaxed. Note that we won't carry a kayak on this trip.
As this is the first overnight trip I have led with the club, and as it is last minute, I would prefer to only take those who are relatively fit and have some experience with overnight walks (e.g. enough experience to know what gear they need). A gear checklist will be circulated before the trip.
