Ever wanted to try Trad climbing?
Well Here's your chance
This trip is for people wanting to Learn the basic skills of trad climbing
Learn the basic principles of trad climbing from placing gear (wires hexes cams)
This is the first step to becoming a trad climber, and we will be concentrate on the basics of placing gear and simple rope work,
After that, advanced techniques and skills will be learnt such as setting up anchors, prussicing and other vital safety for multi pitch trad climbing,
We will meet up at the ANU SRA at 8:30am on Sunday and drive down to Queanbeyan and climb at Wickerslack Crag. there is about a 10min walk in.
once there we will go over safety at a crag and learn about gear placements and rope skills
You will Need: (all can be hired from the gear store)
climbing harness
climbing shoes
helmet
chalk is useful
locking carabiner
autolocking belay device if you have one, but we will provide one for the trip (don't buy one if you haven't already as we will go over some useful information about them)
insect repellent
sunscreen
2 safety slings
Most of the above can be hired from the gear store. You'll also need to bring food and water for the day
You will also need comfortable clothing, shoes suitable for bushwalking (sneakers are fine), sun protection, water, snacks and lunch. If you have a personal first aid kid, it would be a good idea to bring it.
Prerequisites:
must have climbed outdoors at least 3 times
must have some sport leading experience
must be able to use ATC belay device
You must read the hand out given to you on Wednesday as this will help speed up the learning process and you will be able to answer
question asked about the gear used
if you would like to learn trad outside the club you can find lessons at the School of Mountaineering, it is $675
