This delightful walk in the Brindabella Ranges of Namadgi National Park is well suited for beginners. It covers about 15km, commences near the Mt Ginni Air Navigation Facility and follows the Mt Franklin Road (unsealed and closed to traffic) to Pryors Hut then up onto Mt Gingera (1857m). On clear day the views from the summit are some of the best in the Australian Alps, including of Canberra, most of the Namadgi peaks, Mt Jagungal and a distant Mt Kosciuszko. Most of the walk is on gently sloping or flat fire trail, although there is a steady 200m ascent over 800m to the summit plateau which is trackless. Wildflowers and snow gums abound on this walk and it’s common to see wedge-tailed eagles soaring on the thermal air currents above the mountain. This walk, including the drive to and from the ANU, can comfortably be completed in 8 hours, making it an excellent option for a day trip where you don’t want to get up too early and get home really late. There is also a longer, harder option involving a start at Corin Dam and a demanding 600m ascent up Stockyard Spur, but this route is currently closed due to works on the dam itself.
