Archived trip from old website run by sebastianwende
Are you a resort skier who has heard about this daunting thing called the back country? Maybe you've caught wind of the steeper slopes, the tight chutes and un-tracked snow available on the western faces. If you are a strong skier or snowboarder (comfortable on black runs) this could be the trip that introduces you to some of Australia best skiing (we wont be doing anything extreme, nothing harder than a black run in a resort)
The idea will be to use alpine touring gear or split boards to access the great terrain on the Western faces. The club does not own Alpine touring gear but is offering to subsidise a number of rentals from a third party (60% subsidy for students and 40% for non-students). The subsidised rentals are meant for club members that have contributed to the club and are likely to do so in the future. I'm expecting participants to have come to the avalanche safety chats and companion rescue practice. http://anumc.org.au/node/846 http://anumc.org.au/node/847. It would also be great to meet participants in person before the trip so coming to one of these is advised http://anumc.org.au/node/848 http://anumc.org.au/node/849 http://anumc.org.au/node/850.
The trip is limited to 4 people including myself with the idea being that these people are not experienced in the back country. I'm happy for a other experienced people to join in the fun. While I have posted three weekends, the trips will only go ahead if the weather is suitable so it is likely at most two out of three will go ahead. You should sign up to all three weekends but I'll try to take different group each time.
Depending on conditions we may head out Friday night so I'll be expecting you to be ready to leave straight after work. The exact plan will be finalised closer to the date and once the weather is known. A rough plan would be drive up Friday night to Guthega, walk to the Twynam Crique, camp there, Saturday evaluate the groups skills and practice a few things on the terrain around Blue Lake, if there is time a run into Watson's Creek. Saturday night we add a dining room, lounge room and billiards room to our snow cave. Sunday ski into Watson's creek, Walters Gully or the avalanche face.
In the information section please list your skiing or boarding experience and ability, experience with crampons and ice axes, your back country (or even camping) experience.
