Cancelled due to weather
This overnight snowshoe adventure on the first weekend of spring will visit the summits of Australia’s two highest mountains and, weather permitting, provide awesome views across the white mantled Snowy Mountains and beyond. To avoid several hours of hard trudging up hill, we will take the Kosciuszko Express chair lift for the 20-minute ride from Thredbo to the Top Station (1920m). Once high above the Thredbo Valley we will leave the ski resort behind us as we proceed 4.5km along the gentle route of the Kosciuszko Walk to Rawsons Pass (2110m). Time and weather conditions permitting we will ascend Australia’s highest mountain, Mt Kosciuszko (2229m), before continuing a further 3km to establish camp on or near the summit of Mt Townsend (2209m), Australia’s second highest peak. The views from Mt Townsend are truly breathtaking, especially down to the Geehi Valley, which (at 1800m below) is the biggest single ascent/descent in mainland Australia. Alternatively, if the weather conditions are adverse, we will camp lower down in the relative shelter of Wilkinsons Creek valley (1940m). Either way, we will explore as much of the range towards Alice Rawson Peak as time permits before returning to Thredbo Top Station for the ride down to the resort. Total distance for the walk, from Thredbo Top Station, is about 20km with about 800m elevation gain
